WHAT IS A WATERPROOF CHANGING ROBE?
A waterproof changing robe is an essential piece of kit for all outdoor adventure lovers. It’s an oversized coat large enough to get changed under that also keeps you dry in even the harshest conditions.
WATERPROOFING EXPLAINED
If you’re heading for a day outside packed with adventure then waterproof gear is essential. Whether you’re playing in the snow, hiking, or planning a dip in the water, outdoor weather can be unpredictable. Waterproof and breathable fabrics will keep you dry no matter what the weather decides to do. If you have opted for a dip in the water then the more waterproof your gear is, the more likely you’ll be to keep yourself dry and warm once you’re out of the water.
WHAT DO WATERPROOF FABRICS DO
Waterproof fabrics are resistant to water seeping through. This is typically done using a membrane or a coating that acts as a barrier, preventing moisture from permeating the fabric, whilst keeping the wearer dry and snug inside.
A waterproof changing robe is built with a waterproof outer layer and a moisture-wicking inner layer, ideal for keeping the water outside and drying you off super quickly from the inside.
WHAT DO THE NUMBERS MEAN
Waterproofness Ratings:
5,000mm: This is the minimum rating for a jacket to be called rainproof, it will be great in a light shower but not much more.
8,000mm: This is what the majority of waterproof changing robes on the market are, they are waterproof and will withstand a decent shower.
10,000mm – 15,000mm: A jacket in this range will withstand most downpours and adverse weather conditions.
20,000mm and over: This is the most waterproof rating out there. You won’t need this level of waterproofing unless you are planning on going on most outdoor adventures, however, it would be handy if, for example, you planned a multiple-day hike carrying a heavy pack in adverse weather conditions.

CAN OUTERWEAR BE FULLY WATERPROOF?
Although fabrics can be fully waterproof, such as rubber and wax, outwear for active sports will usually be varying degrees of water-resistant as mentioned above. With (a lot of) continued use, the waterproofing in your waterproof changing robe may wear down and break after time.
It is also so important that the inner layer of your waterproof robe contains a moisture-wicking fabric so that even if you are wet from your latest water sports activity or even a bit sweaty from a workout the inner layer of your waterproof changing robe will keep the moisture at bay and dry out in no time.
